It’s February, the month of love! I say month of love because typically, this is when we start planning nice dinners, getting cute little gifts, or simply show more appreciation for those we love. Either way, we tend to just get a little more loving around this time.
I’ve never been the type to care about Valentine’s Day. I don’t need a day to show you I love you, I do that every day. I do understand there are some people who only have the holidays to express their love for others – if you are one of those people, we’re going to pray on that! Love should be given every day you open your eyes, love people and things as the Lord loves you.
I’ve been asked before…What is love?
I’ve debated numerous times about what is could be, how it would be, when it should happen. However, I could never give an actual answer on what love actually is.. Some people will argue that love is only an emotion and that it isn’t a real ‘thing’. While others believe love is about following your heart, honesty, patience, affection, etc.
I was never able to answer the question until now – not saying it is the right answer – just saying I actually have an answer. Love is sacrifice; the act of giving up something that you want to keep, especially in order to get or do something else; or to help someone. (Merriam-Webster Dictionary)
To me love is the surrender of your self for the sake of something or someone else. When I say surrender your self, I mean your selfish ways – whether its your point of views, way of living, feelings, thoughts, wants, etc… You have to be able to sometimes make sacrifices and come to a compromise for that other person or thing. You have to set your self[ish] ways aside, I’m not saying that you should just surrender it all for that person, but you should definitely be willing to. (It works both ways.)
For example, I truly love Bear and we make sacrifices for each other all the time, it’s how we make our marriage work, it’s how we come to an understanding during disagreements, it’s how we show our love for each other. Sometimes one of us has to be the bigger person and just say.. “you know what babe, you’re right.” and let that be that. I believe with sacrifice comes kindness, patience, understanding, admiration, and affection. As you surrender yourself, you become more open and willing to take on someone else’s feelings in place of your own.
Whenever I’m in a selfish state of mind, I am always reminded of the truest form of sacrifice ever created. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” -John 3:16 KJV
If that isn’t love, I don’t know what is. Pops gave up his ONLY Son to save our lives. Who am I to put my own feelings and wants over anyone else’s? We are all children of God, and we should love each other accordingly. So I intend to always love my friends, family, and husband the way my Heavenly Pops loves me.
Stay Feisty….in love!
